The Cape of Good Hope in South Africa? Same deal. Originally named the “Cape of Storms” due to its fierce winds and waves, it earned that name for a reason. Many of the biggest waves that reach the shores of Europe and eastern North America originate in the middle of the North Atlantic, and the long rollers that strike the southwest corner of England can begin as far south as the Cape of Good Hope — some 6,000 miles away.

That’s a wave traveling 6,000 miles. Let that sink in.

Now here’s what’s fascinating. While those monster waves are tearing across the Southern Ocean, there are places on Earth where the water barely ripples.

The highest wave heights are found in areas with strong winds, large oceanic fetch, and deep water. Take away any one of those ingredients, and you get calm water.
